Of the Shadows' Own Accord The Green and Pleasant Land Book 3 eBook Oliver Kennedy Gareth Jackson

Oliver Kennedy’s “Of the Shadows’ Own Accord,” third in the Green and Pleasant Land series, opens with an intriguing few lines of poetry. The short verse suggests the presence of some mysterious figure terrorizing a frightened narrator through simple sights, sounds, and presence. This follows immediately into the story of Annabel Benyion, who takes on a quest for survival as darkness enshrouds the world and the living are overrun by the dead.

The Deathwalker virus has dripped the world, and the militaristic forces of London are struggling their hardest to deal with the fallout. As Annabel and her friends journey through the valley of the shadow of death, things must get worse before they can get better as they tread the more dangerous grounds of Ravensberg. While some may read this description and picture something reminiscent of modern zombie fare, this is a relatively unique story that manages to hold the reader’s attention for the duration of the novella.

Since Kennedy keeps the narrative short, it is easier for him to ensure that they remain entertained throughout the plot. He does not overstay his welcome, and although the story and imagery is intriguing, it is not overly lengthy or overbearing. Those who seek a longer read may be disappointed, but one can easily pair this with the first two novellas in the series if they are seeking a somewhat lengthier reading experience. While this experience will not be the same as extending the length of this book, it will still be an opportunity to explore more writing by a talented author.

The use of dialogue, imagery, and action is well-balanced and wonderfully executed. Readers are sure to enjoy Kennedy’s post-apocalyptic tale about the harrowing journey undertaken by young Annabel, and they are certain to return to the Green and Pleasant Land series for more adventures in the future.

Of the Shadows' Own Accord The Green and Pleasant Land Book 3 eBook Oliver Kennedy Gareth Jackson Reviews

Great read! The writing gets better as you go along!
This book is a quick action packed read! There are many mysteries yet to be discovered. I would describe it as a coming of age type book.

There is a great deal of people prolonging issues, or complicating matters due to their need to protect each other, which we all know doesn't really help in the end.
Young British author Oliver Kennedy describes himself as `a writer, a father, a brother and a son, and I am proud of each of those roles which I hold in life. Just as I am proud, grateful and made happy by those people who are a part of that life.' Initially involved with epic fantasy novels (think Game of Thrones etc), his taste has ripened a bit into the realm of grotesquerie and this very short novella allows him the space to sketch his grasp of the world of post-apocalyptic tales. A bit heavy on the gruesome side, the story still manages to hold attention because of the rather off the cuff manner in which Kennedy writes. He's young, but maturing into a fine writer.

In a relatively short novella Oliver jumps into the fray of the end of Great Britain - the true apocalypse we once only conjectured. Our lead character in this tale is Annabel Benyion and she informs us of what has happened and what is to follow `He sits opposite me at the moment. The giant, the blackwing, the silent, brooding saviour. He polishes the pistols, the long silver cannons which deal such beautiful destruction. I will sit quietly in his company, for within the sphere of the calm colossus I feel safe, I am safe. It all started some months ago, as I sat screaming in the back of a car... ... The twisting of metal. The breaking of glass. The smell of burned rubber. The hiss of airbags. The thud and crack of bones striking hard surfaces at high speeds. We were trying to escape you see. Escaping is rarely something done in a relaxed way. "Dad.""Mum." Neither of them respond. They are both dead. As dead as dead can be these days. Dad leans over the steering wheel which has smashed his ribcage to pieces. Mothers blood drips down over the dashboard. "Dad.""Mum." We need to escape now. We need to run away just like they said on the radio. How long do I sit here? Outside the tinted windows of our luxury car I would say the world is ending. A world has ended in here as well. The causes of our crash are getting to their feet, they stagger, imploring arms outstretched.` And as Oliver outlines the remainder of the story for us, `Annabel succeeds in breaking free from the battleground metropolis, but her troubles do not end there for no part of the world is now untouched by the Deathwalker virus. As she seeks sanctuary in the deep hiding places of the world Annabel must deal with the loss of innocence, survival in the harsh land springing up around her, and the mysteries surroundings mankind's cataclysmic fall from grace. It is these mysteries which will lead Annabel and her friends far to the north, into the hands of newer, fouler enemies and all the dark destinies that await them at a place called Ravensberg.... `

And what this Book 3 of THE GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND SERIES suggests is that will be more stories about this post apocalyptic world (THE DEAD KINGS ISLAND is next), and with Oliver's hand growing more secure with each story it may just be time for him to stretch his novellas into a full fledged novel format. The talent is there, waiting for that step. Grady Harp, November 14
Not the same old zombie story. A quest that holds your interest with a well written story. I look forward to the next book.
This well written story kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to buy the next e-book.
